There are tonnes of diets out there, good ones, bad ones and then we have fad diets. these are the diets that everyone is doing, talking about or knows someone who lost 20lbs in a day. The aim of this article is to discuss if fad diets work.
In the shortest answer, yes and no.
firstly there are so many fad diets you hear about that it would be impossible to cover them all, however il take you through the most popular ones without name dropping so they wont sue me for speaking the truth.
The main compounds of Raspberry ketone supposedly increases adiponectin, a protein which is used to regulate the metabolism. The people who market these Raspberry Ketones would have you believe that taking up to 100mg of these tablets a day will increase your metabolism to burn fat quicker. Now even writing the above statement makes me angry, because its complete 100% nonsense. A simple formula for weightloss is calculated by something known as thermodynamics and it has the simple principle of if you eat more calories than you burn then you will gain weight, and if you eat less calories than you burn you will lose weight.
There have been countless studies on products claiming to boost your metabolism to lose weight and all of them have had no effect or very little effect on weight loss. One of the studies I remember reading concluded that you would have to drink 10 cups of green tea a day to boost your metabolism even 0.1%. if I can find a link to the study I will link it below.
A 0.1% boost in your metabolism, yet your paying stupid amounts of money for this stuff because its sold because it aids weight loss. What a joke. Trust me, in my 10 years of experience I have never seen a metabolism booster work. If you want to take magic pills that make you lose weight then the only option would be illegal substances. And for health and legal reasons alone I wont even speak about them.
Will it work?
If you keep to the same diet and just pop these Ketone tablets then the answer is NO! They simply do not have enough effect on the bodies ability to burn off calories to make a difference. The only thing i would say about the raspberry ketone tablets is that i did feel slightly less hungry and did snack less while i took them.
Now another huge diet fad is the juice diets. And im going to say right away that they do work to an extent. Now before you get all excited and go out and spend your hard earned money on a 3 month supply, please keep on reading.
First of all these juice diets work simply because you are limiting the amount of calories going into your body. It doesnt matter if your food is in liquid form, or your getting the right amount of vitamins in (which quite often these diets lack) at the end of the day all that counts is the calories going into your body vs the amount of calories that you have burned. Now when I say burned I dont mean used up during exercise. I simply mean used at a resting rate. Everyone burns calories it doesnt matter if your a couch potato or an olympic athlete, you will still burn calories, just at a different rate.
Typically these juice diets will tell you to drink between 3 and 5 shakes a day. Each shake roughly consists of 200-300 calories. This could mean that you would be dieting on 1000 – 1500 calories today, which is pretty low. Prolonged dieting at this level will ofcourse cause weight loss.
However, and this is a big however. After your diet finishes and you go back to regular eating, you will no doubt 100% put the weight on that you lost. Another reason why I would highly recommend not doing one of these diets is that most of them are low to no fat, and this isnt a good thing. We have been made to think that fat is bad. It isnt! Without dietry fat we would not survive. Its as simple as that. You can live without carbs, without protein but without dietry fat you would die.
Does it work
yes and no, you will lose weight and put it back on. You will also feel like rubish and you will have spent a lot of money in doing so.
What do I recommend?
Personally my favorite diet of all is not really a diet at all, its more of a lifestyle. Its something called IIFYM, which stands for If It Fits Your Macros. Now believe me when I say this, you can eat any food on this planet as long as it fits your macros. So what are macros? Carbs, fats and proteins are something called macronutrients or macros for short. Then your vitamins are micronutrients or micros for short. As long as you can get your macros to fit in with your daily diet then you will lose weight.
For example. If I were on a diet of 2000 calories a day, then I could pottentially eat a bacon sandwich in the morning, a big mac in the afternoon and whatever else I wanted that would fit into my diet in the night. Now I wouldnt recommend eating junk like this all the time simply for health reasons alone, however to lose weight it can be done.
Now does this sound too good to be true? Possibly. But then ask yourself does taking a magic pill to help you lose weight sound any better?
I use IIFYM every year to slim down in the summer, I roughly lose anywhere between 8-12lbs of fat and retain most of my muscle, I then choose to bulk (put on weight) in the winter to increase my muscle mass. One of my closest friends has used this diet to lose weight and as of right now he has lost over 64 lbs doing the IIFYM diet.
